What is the Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK visas and citizenship?

When you are applying for a UK visa or for British citizenship, you may need to prove your English language ability. The test you can take is the Secure English Language Test, or SELT.

There are four providers of SELT in the UK. These are IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert, Pearson and Trinity College London.

Outside of the UK, SELT providers include IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert, Pearson and PSI Services (UK) Ltd.

There are approved preparation centres all around the UK and beyond where you can hone the skills needed to pass the test. You will take your exam at a SELT provider centre.

The type of test you take will depend on what you are applying for. Levels are in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).

You will need a test that assesses your reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities if you are a skilled worker, a minister of religion, an innovator or a student.

If you are a sportsperson or business representative or are seeking settlement, you will need to take a test assessing your speaking and listening abilities.

The SELT will help your visa application for Further Leave to Remain and Indefinite Leave to Remain and you can use it for a British citizenship application. To sit these successfully, you must have a minimum CEFR level, for example A1, A2 or B1. For this reason, it is well worth investing in a preparation course with expert tutors.

Take a UK Visa Preparation course at Think English online or in Manchester. We can help you decide which SELT exam you need to take and we will enrol you in private, personalised lessons with our native English tutors.

Think English is an approved preparation centre of the Trinity College London SELT and our students have a 98% pass rate! 90% of students achieve a ‘Pass with Merit’ or ‘Distinction’.
