Which exam do you need?

Further Leave to Remain  

CEFR Level Required: A1 

Exam: 6 minute speaking & listening 

  • Family life as a partner of a settled person (Spouse/Partner)

  • Family life as a parent (Parent of a dependent)

British Citizenship

CEFR Level Required: B1

Exam: 10 minute speaking & listening 

  • To become a new British citizen through Naturalisation

Further Leave to Remain

Visa Extension  

CEFR Level Required: A2 

Exam: 7 minute speaking & listening 

  • Family life as a partner of a settled person (Spouse/Partner)

  • Family life as a parent (Parent of a dependent)

An A2 English language SELT is required for family route Leave to Remain applications after 2.5 years in the UK.

Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

CEFR Level Required: B1/B2/C1 

Skills Required: Reading, writing, speaking and listening

Below Degree Level: B1 

Although UKVI requires a B1 test, some institutions require B2 — please check with your sponsor

For B1, take ISE I and for B2  take ISE II

Above Degree Level: B2

Although UKVI requires a B2 test, some institutions require C1 — please check with your sponsor 

For B2, take ISE II and for C1 take ISE III

About the Exam 

 

GESE Grade 2 and 3 requires you to have a conversation with the examiner of up to 6 or 7 minutes. You will be expected to use specific communication skills and meet specific language requirements.

For GESE Grade 5 you will;

Topic: You will choose a topic in advance and you will talk about this during the test. You will need to prepare a Topic Sheet in advance and take it with you to the test. You should also choose 5 mini topics around your main topic. 

Conversation: You'll have a short conversation with the examiner about two things. The examiner chooses the 2 topics from a list of 6 subjects.

  • Means of transport

  • Special occasions, e.g. birthdays

  • Entertainment, e.g. cinema, television, clubs

  • Music

  • Recent personal experiences
